Buller Magic

In the best of company – me (!), Marcelle, Gus, Marissa, Grant & James – we made our way to Mt Buller for the epic MTB Festival….arriving at various times but all equal in our appreciation of the amazing accommodation so generously provided by Lex (cheers, mate)….check out the view from our lounge room/kitchen…warmed by a huge open fire. ¬†Not a bad way to kick things off ūüôā

Down to the business end of the weekend, there were a couple of events that featured on our dance cards:

  • Me: ¬†Schwalbe Stirling Circuit 50km and the 4-hr¬†SRAM Guide Brake Burner (last year’s clip)
  • Marcelle: ¬†Schwalbe Stirling Circuit 50km
  • James: ¬†Schwalbe Stirling Circuit 50km,¬†9.5km Trail Run and the¬†4-hr¬†SRAM Guide Brake Burner

Want to check out the numbers?….give the Movescount logos below a quick click to browse over some stats if you please.

Downhill Enduro

50km Stirling XC

There was no shortage of “moments” during these races….personally, I suffered three solid disconnections from by beloved Superfly FS9 with one providing a wrist injury that still causes me grief. ¬†Aside from those, there were plenty of close calls that seemed to indicate I was giving it all a go…as close to what my own limited ability would allow ūüôā

Practice makes perfect though as I would say I’m a much better rider now….still with plenty to learn.

Marcelle had a few smaller “offs” but also suffered a couple of mechanical and navigational issues that slowed her progress a little. ¬†Despite all this she still remained the beautifully generous person she is….dropping coins in the karma bank – donating a spare tube to a stranded competitor part way through the 50km.

Given the nature of an alpine range environment, the courses were demanding (check the elevation maps on the Movescount links!) but the quality of the trails, crisp clean air and magnificent countryside views were sufficient rewards to dull the pain.  We all suffered in our own way, but finished with ear-to-ear grins and high-fives.

For completely conflicting reasons,¬†the ‘softer’ highlights of the weekend would have to be the¬†Fox 16‚ÄĚ Dual Slalom for it’s non-stop laughs and¬†Flow Pump Track Pursuit for it’s non-stop speed and testicular fortitude. ¬†Check out some of these clips…

As our final hurrah for the weekend, we gathered ourselves together for the 20km downhill monster that is the Delatite Trail….one of Mt Buller’s most iconic rides that starts at the top of the mountain and winds its way down into the valley. ¬†Gus totally nailed this run…so close to an end-over at full tilt but sweetly recovered to finish with nothing but a grin and sore pins ūüôā

Gus - Post Delatite

Coolin’ off dem pins in the Delatite River. Nice.

Before signing off on this quick snapshot of our epic weekend, kudos must be extended to MasterChef Grant for his show-stopping pork belly dinner….devoured by one and all for our final feed of the weekend. ¬†Sensational !
